the truth, and nothing but!
Welcome to my world of amazing but true!
Most of what I write is nonfiction for third and fourth grade readers about animals, civil rights, history and more. I love learning new things, and I hope you will too! I am available for visit schools, so please check out my school visits page.

The latest NEWS!
I am so pleased to share my latest books--both from Scholastic Children's Press. The tree frog book, edited by the brilliant Stephanie Fitzgerald, has information about TRUE tree frogs--amazing little creatures that spend their lives in the leaves. And the book about the U.S. Constitution was one I really had to write, having spent many years as a federal legislative lawyer. I would love to hear how you like them.

Other news!

My middle grade book on financial literacy called MAKING SMART MONEY CHOICES from ABDO was released in August.

I was thrilled to be present again at the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) annual conference this year with award-winning author and teacher Rob Sanders! We will talk about creative uses for nonfiction texts in a presentation called From Page to Stage.

I am also offering a workshop about writing-for-hire at the annual Florida SCBWI conference in Miami January 17-19, 2020. I hope to see all my fellow Florida writers there!

I am also delighted to report that I have returned safely from visiting my daughter AND mountain gorillas in Uganda--amazing creatures!

Check back soon--there are more titles coming. One is a book I co-authored with artist John Platt called HOW TO DRAW A LION (expected publication in Fall, 2020 by Sleeping Bear Press). It will be illustrated with the artwork of children that John has taught in several different African children's villages and the authors' portion of the proceeds will be donated to John's charity.

And that's not all! State Standards Publishing will be releasing four Florida biographies (2020) and Sleeping Bear Press is also publishing STOMPIN' AT THE SAVOY (working title) about big band drummer Chick Webb in 2021.

I am honored that THE INVASION OF NORMANDY from North Star Editions and GREAT WHITE SHARKS from Scholastic Children's Press are both Junior Library Guild selections! And THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THROUGH THE EYES OF LYNDON B. JOHNSON got a STARRED review from Booklist.
